Citizenship

Citizenship in secondary subjects

Subjects are a key way of organising young people's learning and teaching experiences. All have relevance to the development of young people as responsible citizens and thoughtful participants in social life.

Curriculum for Excellence calls for all subjects to be more explicit about their contribution to the key purposes of the curriculum.

Learning and Teaching Scotland has developed audit materials to help you assess the contribution your subject makes to education for citizenship.

Amongst HMIE publications, the following are helpful in evaluating departmental contributions to education for citizenship:

  • How good is our school? Education for Citizenship (HMIE, 2003)
  • How good is our school? International Education (HMIE, 2003)
  • How good is our school? Promoting Race Equality (HMIE, 2004)

These HMIE publications are all available to download in our Evaluation section.
