Citizenship and English

English offers knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues through the choice of texts to be studied. Pupils explore the use of language in a variety of settings, including many that relate to education for citizenship. They study the use of language in context and evaluate its effect and appropriateness. As a subject, English develops the skills of talking, listening, reading and writing. These enable people to co-operate, to resolve conflict and to effect change and improvement.

The practice and refining of these skills in an encouraging, co-operative English class should give young people the confidence to participate effectively and with concern for others, in whichever society and whichever communities they find themselves. Good literacy is intrinsic to effective, active citizenship.

Within this section you can find citizenship teaching approaches, themes and sharing practice specific to the learning and teaching of English.
