Following on from a cluster moderation exercise, the team agreed that their project would raise attainment by ‘implementing formative assessment in functional writing across the curriculum’. Evaluation would be by ‘before and after’ pupil questionnaires, individual progress charts and assessment of written outcomes. Formative assessment techniques would underpin classroom work.
An extensive ‘Guide to Functional Writing Across the Curriculum’ was compiled and contained a variety of practical suggestions, teaching aims and child-friendly learning intentions. This booklet was at the heart of the project.
Upon completion, there were a number of encouraging outcomes. Children had become more focused on their writing and were now more enthusiastic and confident writers who were better able to monitor their own progress. Being clearer about their targets had made them more aware of the importance of structure in their writing.
The intention is to make the booklet widely available to the cluster and beyond, and to encourage discussion of findings online.
