North Lanarkshire Building Bridges case study

Cardinal Newman High School and five associated primaries

Cardinal Newman High School and associated primaries have a long history of successful liaison and shared methodologies.

As a result of a language audit, it was the decision of headteachers to focus on raising attainment in functional writing. A group of interested teachers met for six weekly sessions to plan the way ahead.

Basing the projected work on ideas from the Trish Wilson Writing Pack, Developing Functional Writing, the aim was to encourage greater pupil autonomy to reduce teacher marking/intervention. Four distinct types of writing were highlighted: reports, newspaper articles, writing instructions and letter writing. Teaching and learning activities included conferencing, peer assessment and thinking and listening.

The longer-term aims of the project are to widen the scope to P6 and S2 and to expand into other curricular areas. Monitoring of progress of P7 into S1 will also be undertaken.
