Craigie High School is a modern six-year school with a roll of 800 and along with its associated primary, Mossgiel, serves an area of high social deprivation.
General levels of literacy have been a concern for some time with a literacy audit revealing a need to raise attainment in writing by establishing consistent approaches across the curriculum and across sectors. Increased parental involvement in the ‘Reading Together’ programme at the transition stage would also be a target.
The high school undertook to identify best practice from the ‘New Horizons’ writing programme and the PTs of English, history and curricular support worked together to identify common methodologies. Their work was complemented by author visits.
The primary school focused on the implementation of the core principles of formative assessment to improve writing with the P6/P7 class electing to produce both an electronic book and an edition of a magazine. Editorial staff from a local publishing company spoke to pupils about the processes involved in producing a magazine and pupils were excited and proud to see their book on the school’s website and their magazine in print.
Future intentions are to extend library visits to all primary schools in the cluster and to develop author visits, collate models of good writing and continue to work towards a consistent approach to writing across the curriculum.
