Alloa Academy and 5 associated primaries

Alloa Academy, with a roll of around 760, has five associated primaries with a catchment area across the economic and social spectrum.

The focus here was on functional writing involving the English and history departments in Alloa Academy and P6 and P7 classes in all of the associated primaries.

Materials and strategies developed included formative assessment strategies to share learning intentions and success criteria, providing feedback that impacts on learning, and note-taking lessons. ‘Literacy Across the Curriculum’ KS3 (DfEE) was used as a resource that sat alongside commercial material to support writing across the following genres: recount, instruction, report, explanation, discussion and persuasion.

While initial progress proved problematic, a good deal of productive groundwork had been undertaken. This work resulted in 23 teachers becoming involved across sectors, improved learning and teaching in report writing and a better understanding of formative assessment techniques that built upon existing good practice. In Clackmannanshire, some of the successes of the project are demonstrated in the enthusiasm of the ‘Bridges’ group to continue their work beyond the funded project.
