Carnoustie High School and Kinloch Primary School

Carnoustie High School, with a roll of 860 and six associated primaries, is the only school providing secondary education in Carnoustie and surrounding villages.

Following an audit of language provision in both schools, attention was focused on improving reading and writing skills involving non-fiction texts and accessing information from a variety of sources.

In Kinloch Primary, the High School librarian was involved with the P7 class, familiarising them with appropriate library and research skills. This groundwork was completed before embarking upon the theme of ‘The Home Front in the Second World War’. The history department was called upon to aid exploration of this theme. A variety of DARTs (Directed Activities Related to Texts) techniques were taught including highlighting, underlining and cloze procedures. To record the information, labelling diagrams, flow charts, note taking and writing frames were used to produce a variety of written outcomes.

In the High School the focus was on reading for information in an S2 English class. Their aim was to produce a poster as a follow-on from a drama text, which would avoid the pitfalls of simply copying out researched material. The posters were produced using PC and internet sources and successfully incorporated the pupils’ own language.

The writers of the report were enthusiastic about the outcomes while stressing that the role of the librarian had been crucial in this Building Bridges project. They intended to disseminate their findings throughout the cluster.
