The Assessment of Achievement Programme (AAP) monitored the attainment of pupils from the 1980s to 2004. Until 2002 it monitored performance in English language, mathematics and science in P4, P7, and S2. So for example in 2000 there was a survey of attainment in mathematics and in 2001 a survey of attainment in English language. From 2002 the curricular areas monitored were social subjects (enquiry skills) (2002), science (2003) and mathematics (2004). The core skills of literacy, numeracy, ICT, problem solving and working with others were also assessed in the surveys since 2002. These surveys monitored performance in P3, P5, P7 and S2. The reports of surveys from 2000 to 2004 are available on the key documents page.
On 1 November 2004, the Minister for Education and Young People at that time, Peter Peacock, announced that from May 2005, the Scottish Survey of Achievement (SSA) would replace the annual survey of 5-14 attainment levels. The SSA would build upon the approach used in the AAP to assess pupils' attainments and provide an overview of attainment levels.
