Supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people

Introduction

Many Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) young people are strong, determined and happy with themselves, but everyone finds it tough sometimes, and it's important to get the right kind of support when you need it. LGBT young people can be affected by all the same problems as other young people.

  • LGBT pupils who feel happy, supported  and safe in school are more likely to be successful learners, determined to reach their full potential
  • A school in which homophobia is consistently challenged will enable pupils to develop into healthy and confident individuals with positive values and attitudes
  • An ethos of equality and dignity will help all young people become responsible citizens, exercising their own rights responsibly and with respect for the rights of others
  • A school community where every pupil's individuality and contributions are valued helps pupils develop the skills which they need to become effective contributors.
