Refugees and asylum seekers

Introduction

'An asylum seeker is given refugee status when s/he can prove that they have a well-founded fear of being persecuted. This can be for reasons of their race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion. These terms are set out under the 1951 UN Convention.

A refugee is entitled to the same social and economic rights as any UK citizen. They have full access to medical treatment, education, housing and employment.'
