Gypsies and travellers

Introduction

'Gypsies and Travellers in Scotland are not one homogenous group, but consist of several groups each with different histories and cultures. Importantly, the capitalization of the word ‘Traveller’ distinguishes people belonging to one of a number of Traveller communities from a ‘traveller’ understood as an individual engaged in traveling. The main groups are:

  • Scottish Gypsies/Travellers
  • Occupational Travellers
  • New Travellers
  • Travellers from other parts of Britain or from Europe.'
