Sharing practice

The ‘Sharing practice’ area provides examples of some of the exciting practice taking place in planning, building and delivering the new curriculum. One such example comes from Glenlee Primary School in South Lanarkshire. The case study explains developments that have been taking place in the school since 2007 and is supported by a number of videos about Glenlee. The focus of the case study is:

  • Active learning into P1
  • Continuity of approach and learning from nursery into primary.
  • The ‘Sharing practice’ area provides

Under the leadership of the school’s depute headteacher, the nursery and P1 staff took a fresh look at planning, teaching and learning, and organisation of the learning environment, to take forward Curriculum for Excellence and to improve the continuity of the learning experience for children in the transition from nursery into P1. They saw a need for more collaborative working to accommodate the sharing of early level experiences and outcomes, and to provide rich opportunities for progression and depth in learning for all children. 'School is great. It is fun learning and you get to see and do exciting things. We get to play and learn at the same time.' said one P1 pupil. One of the teachers is equally impressed: 'I have more time to interact and work with my children. I am not bogged down in paperwork and this approach is far less stressful. I can respond and plan for the children’s needs, and they are more motivated and engaged.'

Alan Armstrong says: 'It’s important for all educational professionals to look at the whole structure of the curriculum, not just individual experiences and outcomes, and this is best achieved with the use of both the Curriculum for Excellence folder and the website.' Please visit the website to equip yourself with all the information and advice required to turn the experiences and outcomes into action. Keep returning to make sure that you don’t miss out.'
