Using web page addresses

The web address of a home page looks something like this: www.bbc.co.uk

Let's look at what this address means.

Another web address inside the same website might be www.bbc.co.uk/tv.

When you enter a page's web address into your computer, the computer passes this address to your ISP. The ISP then has enough information to find and transmit the page back to your computer.

Here are some other examples of web addresses:
www.LTScotland.org.uk is the web address for the organisation called LT Scotland in the UK
www.hawick.scotborders.sch.uk is the web address for Hawick High School in the Scottish Borders in the UK
www.scotland.gov.uk is the web address for the Scottish Executive
www.amazon.com is the web address for the company called Amazon, based in the USA
www.google.co.uk is the web address for the Google search engine in the UK.

Most web addresses are fairly easy to understand:

• they usually begin with www
• then have the name of the organisation
• then the type of organisation
• then the country.
