How to identify a writer’s purpose

To identify the writer’s purpose, you should look at the following points:
  • Introductory paragraph(s)
  • Stated purpose
  • Implied purpose
  • Title or headline
  • People quoted
  • Pictures, charts and other graphic material.

We’re now going to look at each of these points in detail. We shall look at the article ‘Excluded by the system’ as an example as we work through these points. This article comes from a newspaper, but the general points that are being made apply to other types of writing as well.
