Discursive essays and personal reflective essays

You may be asked to write either a ‘discursive essay’ or a ‘personal reflective essay.' The structure we’ve just looked at applies to both types of essay, but there are some important differences between the two forms.

Discursive essay
A discursive essay (sometimes called an argumentative essay) is one in which you look at a range of points in turn. Discursive essays usually work methodically through all of the arguments, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses.

The word discursive means passing from one subject to another. When you’re writing a discursive essay, you’re looking at different points of view, and bringing the reader to your conclusion by saying which points you agree with and which you disagree with.
