What else you need to know: spelling, punctuation and syntax

One of the differences between Intermediate 2 and Higher Communication is the stress on accuracy in spelling, punctuation and syntax. Whereas in Communication (Intermediate 2) some errors are allowed, fewer mistakes are allowed in Communication (Higher).

It’s important that you have a good grasp of spelling and punctuation. You may be allowed to word process your assessments, and this will help with spelling and some of the punctuation. If you’re at all concerned about spelling or punctuation, speak to your teacher/tutor now. S/he will be able to offer you the appropriate level of extra support.

Wording should be appropriately complex, but this doesn’t mean that you have to write complicated and detailed sentences. Focus on the strength of your analysis and arguments – and express your ideas so that the intended reader can make sense of them.
