Introduction
Within schools in Scotland there may be children from a range of faith backgrounds including those of no belief. Schools in Scotland, whether denominational or non-denominational, are sensitive to the need to be inclusive and respectful of this diversity within their populations. Schools will seek to develop an inclusive approach when teaching RME. Such an approach will embrace principles of equality and justice that include being anti-sectarian and anti-racist.
To be anti-sectarian means being mindful of the occurrence of divisions within and between faith and belief groups can occur. Divisions between denominations, sects, faith and belief groups, especially when they polarise and entrench views, create breeding grounds for sectarianism.
Effective teaching of RME which recognises and challenges bias and assumptions while enabling the exploration of ideas in an atmosphere of respect for all denominations, sects, faiths and beliefs can make a concrete contribution to challenging sectarianism.
