Notes for Teachers

This package encompasses each of the four elements of English Language: reading, writing, talking and listening.

It is designed to complement the New Horizons in Writing package, which focuses on the different genres of Non Fiction writing: recount, report, persuasion, explanation argument / discussion.

The approach is one of immersion in model text. There are two texts for the children to read and discuss. One is a fictional account of a young boy's experience of an Old Firm match. The other is a factual article published by the Sunday Herald. The articles should be read and discussed, both independently and in comparison.

Following the reading of the texts, there are a variety of suggested activities for the children to tackle independently or in small groups. Writing frames have been provided where applicable.

The most important element in this package is discussion: the literacy approach is only a vehicle to get children talking and thinking about the serious subject of sectarianism.

These lessons develop pupils’ capacities in line with the purposes of the curriculum 3-18, most importantly they contribute toward young people becoming responsible citizens with a commitment to participate responsibly in political, economic, social and cultural life

In addition each activity contributes towards other elements of A Curriculum for Excellence. These specific contributions are noted alongside descriptions of the activities.
