Continuing Professional Development of Early Years Practitioners

Learning and Teaching Scotland has commissioned research which will review continuing professional development provision for early years practitioners and managers (working with children under three years of age).  The research is being undertaken by the Quality in Education Centre, University of Strathclyde.

The research began in April 2008 and is due to be completed in October 2008.

Research aim:

To review current continuing professional development (CPD) provision for early years practitioners and managers (birth to three years) and to make recommendations that will assist LTS in ensuring that effective CPD opportunities that meet the needs of children and families are made available.

Research objectives:

1. To undertake a review of relevant existing sources. This is to include a review of Care Commission and other relevant sources and reports to identify areas that might require CPD. It should also include a discussion of the definition of CPD in the early years sector.

2. To compare and contrast the perspectives of early years practitioners (birth to three years), early years centre managers, and appropriate local authority officers in the following areas:

  • definitions of CPD and their perceptions of effective CPD
  • areas of birth to three years work where CPD is undertaken and is considered to be effective for early years practitioners and managers
  • gaps that exist in current provision for CPD for early years practitioners and managers
  • priorities for CPD for early years practitioners and managers
  • effective and preferred types of CPD for early years practitioners and managers
  • effective and preffered systems for the delivery of CPD for early years practitioners and managers
  • access and barriers to participation in CPD for early years practitioners and managers
  • qualifications obtained and perceived usefulness in preparation for their roles.

3. To measure the extent to which the national birth to three guidance document and the staff support pack are used and to explore the ways in which these documents are used by each of the three stakeholders (early years practitioners, early years centre managers and local authority officials).

4. To identify examples of good practice.
