Learning and Teaching Scotland aspire to create world class learning experiences for every child and young person in Scotland.  Funded by the Scotish government, we contribute to building a smarter, greener, healthier, wealthier and fairer society by ensuring our next generation is equipped with the skills needed to live, work and succeed in the globalised economy.

We are the lead organisation for the development of the curriculum, driving teaching forward to create a climate of innovation, ambition and achievement for all children.

Scotland’s education system has undergone a wholesale review.  Our Curriculum for Excellence will ensure learners have an education fit for the twenty-first century.  Learning and Teaching Scotland has developed engaging and challenging experiences and outcomes for all learners aged 3-18.  We are responding to the evolving education landscape by providing first class support to the 54,000 teachers working in almost 3,000 schools across Scotland.

Our 250 staff, many of them seconded practitioners, cover the country identifying good practice and sharing it with the profession. We host the Scottish Learning Festival showcasing the best of education to almost 7,000 delegates.  We provide CPD opportunities giving teachers access to training, seminars and workshops to enhance their skills.  And we develop free online and print resources to support the curriculum.

To ensure Scottish education has a world view, we also fund study visits abroad for teachers to promote an international perspective in Scottish education, and we have established Scotland’s first Confucius Classrooms to promote the learning and teaching of Chinese language and culture.

Learning and Teaching Scotland is also at the cutting edge of exploring, promoting and developing the use of ICT in education.  We manage Glow; the world’s first education intranet.  The ground breaking network will provide a safe and secure online environment that digitally links every school, teacher and pupil in the country from the highlands to the borders, providing the twenty-first century tools for collaborating, sharing resources and ideas.  Glow will transform the way education is delivered in Scotland, and LTS is leading the way, providing the modern tools for delivering a modern curriculum.

We also explore new technologies and games based learning, investigating how we can harness them for learning, and our online services provide 35,000 pages of integrated support for teaching.  Education is part of the wider integrated learning landscape and Learning and Teaching Scotland forges strong partnerships with other organisations working to provide better life chances and choices for our young people.

We work closely with all 32 local authorities, skills and career colleagues, and further and higher education bodies to ensure positive outcomes for all our children as they mature into adulthood joining up the education community.  Scotland has one of the most renowned and successful education systems in the world.
