J K Annand (1908–1993) was born and brought up in Edinburgh. He attended Broughton Secondary School and Edinburgh University before becoming a teacher of English and history.

Annand is best known for his bairnsang (short rhymes for children, often about birds or animals or imitating street games and rhymes) but he also wrote poetry for adults in Scots and English.

Annand edited 'Lines Review' and 'Lallans' (the magazine of the Scots Language Society, of which he was a founder member) and was an important figure in the Scottish literary scene.
