At the early education stage, children are assessed for various reasons:

  • to determine a starting point
  • to measure progress
  • to confirm teacher informal assessment
  • to relate achievement to starting point
  • to confirm teaching and learning is appropriate and successful

Assessment of progress

City of Edinburgh Council Education department has prepared its own means of assessing early progress in both literacy and numeracy. These progress tests are designed to be implemented towards the end of the Primary 1 stage.
