NGfL Early Years site HMI reports
These are HMI reports relating to a range of early years issues, such as early years intervention, standards and quality in pre-school education and assessment, from 1997 onwards.

NGfL Early Years site: Links
This lists the early years 'Interchange' documents published by SEED, with the aim of communicating research findings to all those working in pre-school centres, schools and colleges. Most are PDFs.

National Literacy Trust: Database of links
The focus of this section of the NLT website is literacy in primary schools throughout the UK. It consists of a news update followed by government approaches, research, statistics, initiatives including reading initiatives, and resources.

National Literacy Strategy
This website makes available guidance, publications and resources from the NLS. It provides direct access to professional development materials and information about new initiatives to support improvements in literacy.

National Numeracy Strategy
This is the final report of the Numeracy Task Force, entitled 'The Implementation of the National Numeracy Strategy'. It describes an agenda for action to implement the NNS, based on the proposals made in the preliminary report, 'Numeracy Matters'.

Scottish Book Trust
This website features recommended books for children of different ages, its own publications to support learning to read, and information about the Writers in Scotland Scheme and literacy events such as National Poetry Day.

Bookstart
This is a national scheme offering free books to every child and advice about how to encourage very young children to enjoy books. The site offers a newsletter and information about the activities of local Bookstart schemes around the UK.

Booktrust
Booktrust is an educational charity concerned with promoting children's reading. The site includes reading lists, information about literary events, including National Children's Book Week, book prizes and projects, and lists of Booktrust publications and resource materials.

Reading Recovery Research
This research, published in 1997, shows the impact of the 'Reading Recovery' process on children's reading and ability in spelling. This impact was measured up to four and a half years after the children had experienced the process.

Documents associated with the Child at the Centre Conference. Includes self-evaluation workshops and information about appropriate performance indicators. Essential reading for all centres providing care and education for 3-5-year-olds.

A self-evaluation guide (PDF) for centres providing pre-school education and day care for children aged 3-5. It contains a series of performance indicators used to assess the quality of centres providing pre-school education.

The EI Prog. Num and Literacy
This leaflet reports on progress in the first year of the Early Intervention Programme. The comments in the leaflet draw on progress reports for 1997-98 submitted by education authorities.

Accelerating reading attainment: the effectiveness of synthetic phonics (pdf) (Watson, Johnston, 1998). This summarises our knowledge about the teaching of reading and concludes that teaching synthetic phonics leads to fewer underachieving children.

Interchange 71
Early intervention in literacy and numeracy: Key issues from the National Evaluation Programme (Fraser, MacDougall, Pirrie, Croxford, 2001). Report on the evaluation of the Early Intervention Programme, which examined local authority schemes and the impact of the initiative on pupil attainment in literacy and numeracy.

Classroom Assistants: Key Issues from the National Evaluation (Wilson, Schlapp and Davidson, SCRE, 2002). Report of the two-year national evaluation of the use of classroom assistants and their impact on classroom practice and pupil learning.

Insight 3
Moving On to Primary 1: An Exploratory Study of the Experience of Transition from Pre-School to Primary (Stephen and Cope, Institute of Education, University of Stirling, 2003). This is a report of a study of 27 Primary 1 pupils to explore their perspectives of school and to look at any implications for children who were receiving out-of-home care in their pre-school year.

Insight 4
Accelerating Reading and Spelling with Synthetic Phonics: A Five-Year Follow Up (Johnston, University of Hull and Watson, University of St. Andrews, 2003). Report on the follow up to the 1998 Interchange 57 research on the use of synthetic phonics describing the progress made from Primary 1 to the end of Primary 5, and comparing the attainment of boys with girls.
