Currently there appears to be an overemphasis on an academic, subject-centred curriculum, with too much stress placed on memorisation of factual content, assessment and examination of individual pupils, and audit of and setting of targets for the system as a whole.
Much more attention should be given to various higher order capacities such as thinking skills and citizenship skills.
Early intervention initiatives have been implemented and evaluated locally and nationally. A number of issues and questions have been raised for debate, some of which are noted in the National Evaluation Report Summary.
