Research into methods of teaching and learning in the area of early reading have brought about the majority of the changes that have taken place and that have altered people's perspective of how literacy is developed in young children.

Phonics

The question of phonics is one that has initiated a great deal of research work. One of the early results of that research was the phonics position statement made by the International Reading Association in 1997.

The International Reading Association Position Statement gives the views of a large number of reading experts on the use of phonics in reading instruction.

Action research

A number of local authority projects have been conducted and evaluated in an 'action research' format and reports published that describe these projects.
