2008 Year of Reading

Led by the National Literacy Trust and the Reading Agency, this website promotes and supports the National Year of Reading with information and resources. There are themes for each month from April 2008, while from January to March schools and organisations can come up with ideas for the year ahead. The website's information and resources will expand as the year progresses.

1. Pond Education Pack
Information about the free Pond Education Pack from Plantlife International - a charity dedicated exclusively to conserving all forms of plant life in their natural habitats, in the UK, Europe and across the world.

2. Skara Brae
A BBC website with learning activities that allow primary children to explore the world of Skara Brae past and present, and find out how archaeology is used to discover what life was like five thousand years ago.

3. Culloden
Information from the National Trust for Scotland on the history, politics and events surrounding the battle of Culloden, along with details of what you can see on the battlefield today and a description of the new visitors' centre and exhibition.

4. Visual Arts Data Service
Online access to visual arts resources from the UK focussing on images from fashion, design, architecture, arts and crafts collections and of historical prints, posters and banners. The images are copyright-restricted but can be used for personal, education and research purposes.

5. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Part of the Edinburgh, UNESCO City of Literature website which has information, teachers' and librarians' resources and activities for pupils, all related to the novel 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' by Robert Louis Stevenson, the focus of the 2008 reading campaign.

6. Loch Ness
Feature and activities about Loch Ness, its monster and the Scottish legend of the kelpie, with accompanying resources related to the release of the children's film, 'The Water Horse, Legend of the Deep', in early 2008.

7. Burns Night
An online interactive guide to celebrating Burns Night, with performances of a couple of the poems, information about Robert Burns and menus for Burns Night, including modern recipes with Scottish ingredients.

8. Filth and fever
This online learning pack from the British Library explores what life was like for the poor in Victorian cities and examines the 1840s campaign for public health reform. It has copies of original sources with cartoons, statistics, and newspaper articles as well as biographies of the reformers, a timeline and a glossary.

9. 2008 National Year of Reading
Website to promote and support 2008 as the National Year of Reading, led by the National Literacy Trust and The Reading Agency. The site has information about the Year of Reading and links and resources, which will be expanded throughout 2008.

10. Golden Compass resources
The Guardian has compiled a range of links and suggestions for using the fantasy film, The Golden Compass, as a focus for learning and discussion in Religious Education and citizenship, as well as English and art.
