In this section three schools describe the progressive and cumulative nature of their whole-school strategy development plans.
Liz Gavin, deputy headteacher at Capshard Primary School, discusses the whole-school plan and how it includes provision for open-ended investigations as well as strategy development.
Neil Armstrong of Newington Primary School and Ann Rubython from Balfron Primary School have whole-school plans similar to those used at Capshard Primary School.
Each of these schools produced its programme after consultation and discussion with all staff. They collectively decided which strategies were appropriate for the different stages and introduced a few at the early stages, which they felt that the youngest pupils could work with. More strategies were introduced at subsequent stages, as pupils progressed through the school, until - by the end of P7 - they had a working knowledge of a reasonable number.
What are your views about this type of programme, in which strategies are introduced sequentially?
What are the advantages of each school designing its own programme?
