Opportunities for teaching and learning problem solving skills and attitudes exist throughout the curriculum and many schools are increasingly exploiting opportunities for developing and applying them in other curricular areas.
Additionally, skills and behaviours learned in problem solving are being transferred by pupils for use throughout the curriculum.
In this video clip Kathleen Blacklaw, headteacher of Bishopmill Primary School, Fiona Hislop, headteacher of Airlie Primary School, Robyn Robertson of Urafirth Primary School and Anne Henry of Howwood Primary School give their views on the cross-curricular nature of problem solving.
How might you encourage pupils to use their problem solving skills in areas other than mathematics?
Do pupils transfer these skills naturally or should teachers make conscious efforts to foster them throughout the curriculum?
