Some schools are choosing to introduce strategies that are not amongst those referred to in the 5-14 Guidelines. In this video you will hear several such strategies mentioned.
Joyce Redpath in Capshard Primary School is concentrating on ‘Working together’ and ‘Making models from pictures’, whilst two of Lynne Hair’s pupils in Wemyss Bay Primary School suggest that ‘Listen to each other’s ideas’ and ‘Discuss ideas with your partner’ are two strategies appropriate for the challenge they have been set.
You will note that three of the four strategies mentioned above refer to desirable ways of working with others. Do you consider these to be acceptable mathematical problem solving strategies?
Should we do more to teach strategies that encourage desirable attitudes and ways of working?
Why do you think the teachers shown might have chosen these strategies?
