Here you can see how three teachers are encouraging their pupils to compile their own problem solving record. The formats shown are designed to note all problems attempted, to focus pupils’ attention on the strategies they have used as well as asking pupils to evaluate their performance on each problem.
Note that the girl from Capshard Primary School, in the first section, explains how the same record sheets have spaces in which the teacher, once or twice a year, can write formative assessment comments.
The second section of the video shows Heather Cross and one of her P7 pupils at Newington Primary School and the third part shows two pupils at Pitlochry High School.
What are the strengths of this type of self-recording and assessment?
Can you think of any shortcomings of such a system?
How does the practice in Pitlochry High School differ from the others we have seen?
