Neil McQueen has been teaching mathematics at Harris Academy for 28 years, having previously studied at the University of Dundee and Dundee College of Technology. He teaches S1 to S5 pupils.
This is the first Cognitive Acceleration in Mathematics Education (CAME) lesson the S2 pupils have encountered. It involves investigating number patterns that generate a particular shape and finding an algebraic formula for the pattern.
Neil shows them the first part of the exercise on the board and then the pupils ‘Think, pair and share’ and complete worksheets, which give them several number patterns for the roof shape. Neil writes these on the board and asks the pupils to discuss with their partners what they think the rule is, for generating the shape.
Pupils suggest relationships between the numbers: for example, the first and the third numbers add up to the fourth. From this, Neil is able to tease out the algebraic formula.
