Invergowrie Primary School is a village school just outside Dundee with around 220 pupils.
An inspection at Invergowrie Primary School found that, although problem solving was being covered, pupils were not aware of the strategies they used to arrive at a solution. Susan Kyle set up a working group with staff from the lower, middle and upper school, which identified strategies to be covered at each stage. Considerable time and effort was spent organising resources into folders based on strategies.
Problem solving is part of the maths curriculum but is taught separately for an hour each week. At the end of every other lesson, pupils fill in a self-evaluation sheet: this includes a smiley face for the infants and, higher up the school, a description of the strategy used to solve a problem.
The problem solving programme has been running for a couple of years. Susan hopes that pupils will be able to use the strategies they have learnt in other areas of the curriculum and in everyday life.
