Howwood Primary School in Renfrewshire is situated in a rural setting west of Glasgow, with around 110 pupils.
Howwood Primary School recently had an HMI inspection at which pupils were found to be working well in problem solving. Problem solving at Howwood Primary is part of the maths programme and teachers use Scottish Heinemann Maths as the core resource, augmented by On the Track and material from North Lanarkshire.
Problem solving is incorporated into planners so that staff know exactly when and what they should be teaching. Pupils’ photocopied worksheets are kept as a record in their maths folders and these are available to parents and passed on to the next teacher.
Anne Henry sees problem solving as a life skill, which should permeate all areas of the curriculum. Problem solving skills are used in science and technology in particular and even in structured play in P1.
