Section 4

PROGRAMMES OF STUDY

The relationship between the targets and the existing nationally approved Religious Education programmes for Catholic schools is explained in Section 3. The following programmes of study are therefore linked to the Veritas programme and to the National Syllabus S1/S2, both of which provide opportunities for pupils to attain most of the targets for Christianity and Personal Search and some of the targets for other World Religions.

Other appropriate resources may be used to supplement the nationally approved programmes and at times will be necessary if targets are to be attained. This will be especially the case when the other World Religions targets are being addressed.

Suggestions are made in the programmes of study regarding the linking of targets. These, however, are only suggestions and teachers may prefer to link targets differently, to suit the particular way in which they plan and implement a religious education theme.

The following abbreviations, are used in the programmes of study:
CHR
:
Christianity
oWR
:
other World Religions
PS
:
Personal Search

Linking Religious Education with other curricular areas

Links are possible with other curricular areas. In English Language, sacred writings and stories from Christianity or other World Religions can provide the texts for 'Listening, Talking and Reading' in the appropriate language strands; an understanding of the different types of writing in the Bible can contribute to an awareness of genre; the discussion of moral dilemmas can provide abundant opportunities for listening to others, showing awareness of their opinions and feelings and contributing to purposeful talk.

There are links between 'Awareness of Creation' in Personal Search and the parts of Environmental Studies which deal with the earth's physical features and their impact on human life; between the strands in Christianity and other World Religions and parts of Environmental Studies which deal with aspects of time and heritage; between the 'Self Awareness' and 'Awareness of Others' strands in Personal Search and the parts of Environmental Studies which deal with the way human societies are organised and administered.
