Level F in Mathematics

The advice provided on programmes of study on pages 42-61 is comprehensive and generally applicable at Level F.

Attainment targets for Level F have been largely based on the advice on programmes for pupils Beyond Level E on pages 63-75. Two new strands have been introduced, namely Probability and Algebra. The introduction of the latter is consistent with the advice on algebra in the recently published report Improving Mathematics Education 5-14. In those strands concluding at Level E, the opportunity should be taken to encourage pupils to consolidate previously acquired skills and knowledge and develop and use problem-solving and enquiry skills.

To attain a particular Level, pupils should be able to carry out specific calculations mentally. Teachers should expect pupils to continue to do such calculations mentally from that point on, as they progress, rather than to resort to using a calculator. Such a policy, adopted by all staff, will enable pupils to retain their skills because they will be using them regularly. Appropriate use of the calculator will thus depend largely on the Level attained by the pupils concerned.

Continuing the pattern of Levels A-E, National Test materials for Level F will be available. As at Level E, pupils will be expected to tackle some units without the use of a calculator.

Principal Teachers of Mathematics in secondary schools should encourage teachers of Mathematics to be aware of attainment targets and programmes of study for related topics in other curriculum areas. For example, the following attainment targets from Environmental Studies at Levels E and F will be particularly relevant:

Information Technology

Using Information Technology

Social Subjects
Collecting Evidence
Recording and Presenting

Applying Skills and Presenting Solutions
