Dear Sir
GUIDELINES ON LATIN 5-14
This Circular conveys to education authorities and schools
guidance from the Secretary of State on the teaching of
Latin to pupils in the first and second years of secondary
schools. In preparing the guidance account has been taken
of the responses received to SOED Working Paper Number 10:
Latin 5-14, which was issued in August 1991. The Secretary
of State is grateful to all who responded to the invitation
to comment contained in that Working Paper.
The Secretary of State believes that the guidance now issued
provides a sound basis for introducing this important subject
to those pupils who wish to study it and may benefit from
the rich and varied educational experience it can offer.
It remains the policy of the Government, as set out in SOED
Circulars 1178 and 211990 on the Teaching of Languages other
than English that the study of classical languages should
be encouraged where appropriate and that within each area
a number of schools continue to offer courses in these languages.
The Secretary of State commends the guidelines and invites
education authorities and schools to use them in the teaching
of Latin from the beginning of session 1992/93.
Any enquiries about the circular should be made to Mr.
M. G. Wright (Telephone 031-244 4433) at the above address.
Yours faithfully
