Some teachers may wish to make notes regularly; others only when a substantial body of work has been completed. Some teachers may also wish to record strengths and developmental needs which are not related to, or which overarch, the strands. The use of an assessment profile, in fact, should be flexible, providing that it helps teacher and pupil to achieve a balanced view of the pupil's performance, and to identify areas for further development. At the end of a session, comments on each of the four areas of Language will help the pupil's next teacher to plan a programme which takes account of that pupil's needs.

Reporting on success and progress

It will be desirable and necessary to report on the progress and success of each pupil in relation to national attainment targets in Language. Additionally, there will be a report on the attainment of pupils who have completed national tests in reading and writing. The evidence collected by the teacher will be used in arriving at the professional judgements which will form the basis of the pupil report to parents, which is set in the context of national guidelines in this area.
