LEVEL F IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Work at this level should provide opportunities for pupils to broaden the range of their listening, talking, reading and writing. Pupils will need opportunities to work independently but will continue to require good quality support and exposition of ideas, pitched at an appropriate level. Standard Grade should not limit pupils' or teachers' expectation of what some pupils might achieve in P6-S2.

Attainment targets for Level F have been largely based on the advice in programmes for pupils Beyond Level E. in those strands concluding at Level E or earlier, the opportunity should be taken to consolidate previously acquired skills and knowledge. A new strand has been introduced, namely Writing about texts, to develop pupils' study and understanding of the ideas and language in texts of all kinds included in their programmes. Although this strand draws on pupils' reading skills, it is included in the attainment outcome for Writing, to parallel the strand Talking About Texts in the attainment outcome for Talking, and because the main focus in this strand is on pupils' capacity to write about their responses to reading.

Continuing the pattern of Levels A-E, National Test materials for Level F will be available.

Teachers of English in secondary schools should be aware of attainment targets and programmes of study in other curriculum areas. For example, the following strands from Environmental Studies at Levels E and F will be particularly relevant:

Collecting Evidence;
Recording and Presenting.

In other areas of the curriculum also, pupils working towards targets at Level E and Level F are expected to gather and express information and ideas in talk and in writing, adapting their content and style to suit their particular purpose and audience.
