PROGRAMMES OF STUDY

Observing, reflecting, describing and responding

Observe closely, identify and comment upon key elements in performances;

monitor and adjust personal performance against given criteria, recognising own strengths and development needs.

Observe closely, describe, analyse and make evaluative judgements on key aspects of performances;

evaluate their own, peer and others’ performances, making a contribution to developing criteria;

take responsibility for improving their own performance, based on recognition of personal strengths and development needs;

demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and understanding of what constitutes a good performance to form judgements and to make constructive critical suggestions, specific to the activity, about how a performance might be improved.

Pupils should be given the opportunity to observe, describe, analyse and evaluate as wide a range of activities as possible, e.g. peer observation in class, video of a gymnastics competition, visit to a theatre to watch a professional dance company.

Pupils should now be involved in devising criteria and should be encouraged to use criteria to make judgements in different ways, e.g. use of an observation checklist, giving oral feedback to teacher or peers.
