Investigating and developing fitness
|
Maintain and extend personal exercise habits;
show awareness of the relationship between
exercise and physical well-being;
monitor, over a period of time, the effects
of exercise on fitness.
|
Continue the development of their personal
exercise habits and improve their fitness;
demonstrate a knowledge and understanding
of the role of exercise in fitness and health;
assume responsibility for their own health
and fitness,
e.g. through planning, development and review of a simple
personal fitness programme.
|
At this stage, pupils should be given the opportunity to
develop and improve their personal fitness. They should
be encouraged to continue to evaluate their own lifestyles
and to gain a knowledge and understanding of the extrinsic
and intrinsic values of adopting a healthy lifestyle.
Pupils should be encouraged to devise a personal profile
which shows a knowledge and understanding of the various
elements of fitness (strength, flexibility, speed, endurance,
etc) and to monitor and evaluate changes and any improvements
over a sustained period of time. This is important in the
promotion of independence in learning.
Where appropriate, links with Health Studies and PSD should
be encouraged to reinforce knowledge and understanding of
common issues.
Opportunities should continue to be provided pupils to develop
their understanding of the importance of health and safety,
e.g. showering after physical education lessons; safe
use of apparatus in gymnastics.
